Final #10

Throughout my experience of Western Civilization, I have learned not only about the history of Alexander the Great, the Renaissance, etc. But also, how to cite articles in APA format, what makes a good source, and how to properly write a academic essay. This class greatly advanced my writing skills, and also made me realize how difficult it would be to be a historian as a profession.

A Renaissance man is someone who contains great knowledge throughout a countless amount of subject areas. Michelangelo was a famous Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer. Clearly, his knowledge was very diverse in numerous amounts of fields.

Over here it was that my love stole from me,
In his mercy, my heart and, farther on, my life.
Here with his beautiful eyes he promised me help,
And with the same eyes here he stole it back.
Over here he bound me and here released me;
For myself I wept here, and with infinite sorrow
From this rock I saw him leave,
He who stole myself from me and never turned back.
I live in sin, dying to myself I live;
Life is no longer mine, but belongs to sin;
My good is from heaven, my evil I give to myself,
From my own unbound will, which has been stolen from me.
My freedom is a slave, my divinity has made itself
Mortal.
Oh, unhappy state!
To what misery, to what life I've been born!

Romanesque and Gothic Cathedrals played a big role in the different European civilizations, especially in the theology of religion. So because of this, the archaeologists tried to express their religious views through the structure of Romanesque and Gothic Cathedrals. Through the architecture of Romanesque Cathedrals, fortitude and sanctuary were clearly displayed in the case of an invasion occurring. In the Gothic Cathedrals, it was all about the light being shown throughout the stain glass windows that aligned the cathedral’s walls. This light represented all the glory of God that could not be described in nearly enough words, which was also a sufficient way of spreading the faith they believed in. These cathedrals stood for more than just a building of holiness; they also expressed a deeper meaning in religious theology of that time.

 Romanesque and Gothic Cathedrals contained a much greater meaning than looks may perceive them as. For these cathedrals, express the theology of religion that was believed at the time. From the exterior to the interior, remarkable beliefs are within the structures. Towers, windows, and columns, of both cathedrals are just some of the evidence of the faith in which each cathedral holds within. These glorious cathedrals that plummet into the sky can represent many other different aspects in the society of the people living in that era, but most importantly religious theology.

The black death started in Europe in 1348. It was carried throughout the Silk Road by black rats who contained oriental rat fleas. Also, merchant ships could easily have transported the rats from Asia to Europe. Many Europeans tried to prevent this plague by keeping the sick locked away. However, that did not work. For the black death spread throughout Europe causing the death of many and great havoc to occur. Streets would be lined with garbage and human waste only increasing the possibility of the black death.

A bloody nose was one of the most common signals that the black death has began to overtake its victim. Tumors located in the groin or armpit were also found ranging from the size of a egg to a apple. After, black spots would also appear on their skin most likely on their arm or thigh. There were no proper remedies that could be used in the occurrence of the black death since of the lack of technology.

If the black death was to happen again but instead at this time period, scientists would hopefully find a remedy. Doctors would be overwhelmed with patients, and more doctors would be in need. If there was not a cure, however, everyone would die.

Whats that spell?
Richard for religion
Dear Readers,
Going into a war for "religious purposes" is truly unjust. Killing would be inevitable, which would be against your god's teachings. Richard is a cruel leader, who should not be followed. He does not truly care about Jerusalem as the "holy city", but instead only wants to gain more power over the rest of us. Richard of England is a selfish ruler, and for that reason alone no one should join him on his crusade.
Sincerely,
Saladin

Today in the United States there are many more advancements in our government and food supply, but also the generosity of others has also increased. During one period of Rome, there was a line of bad emperors would were in reign. The government was not as sufficient. Food supply was limited because of the lack of technology. Also, many of the peasants or even wealthy with mental or physical disabilities were look down on. The United States now is far more advance than the time of the Roman Empire.

The United States' government has changed and added many new laws to the justice system such as a drinking age and in some states banning the death penalty. "When he became emperor, he did not hesitate to boast in the Senate that he had conferred their power on both his father and his brother, and that they had but returned him his own; nor on taking back his wife after their divorce, that he had "recalled her to his divine couch" ["Pulvinar" here means the couch for the images of the gods; cf., Aug. xlv.1]"

  • In The Decatur Daily published in Decatur, Alabama, the FEMA funds to build shelters. This act of kindness only proves how benevolent some people in the United States are now. Back in the time of the Roman Empire before Emperor Claudius was in reign,
"His grandmother Augusta [Arkenberg: i.e., Livia] always treated him with the utmost contempt, very rarely speaking to him; and when she admonished him, she did so in short, harsh letters, or through messengers." Throughout the years, the amount of kindness shared has increased also meaning that the United States as a country as advanced too.

Herodotus
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/01/us/01gitmo.html?_r=1&ref=sept112001
Herodotus was very opinionated in his writing. But because of this, he also left out some of the details. Instead he focused only on the main points of what had happened. This article is about defendants that were charged with terrorism and murder. Throughout the article, the main point is stated. However, there is a few amount of details located within it. The opinion of the author was not said in the actual words, but if you do read between the lines a reader could distinguish their opinion.

Thucydides
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/s/sept_11_2001/index.html?scp=1-spot&sq=September%2011&st=cse
Thucydides was very precise when he wrote. He contained an immense amount of detail in his writing, but did not care for his opinion. Instead, he was unbiased when he wrote about a situation. This article is about what happened on September 11, 2001. There was a great amount of detail within the article. But clearly, there was also no opinion.

Final #3

In Egypt, people would mainly focus on the afterlife instead of their current life in the world. They lived their live with the motives for what would come when they died. Their belief was that their Ka, soul, was to be weighed on a scale with a feather by the god Horus. If their Ka was lighter than the feather, their soul would be able to advance to the after world. If their Ka was heavier, there were banned in limbo for eternity.

The Greeks also did a great deal for when a death was to occur, and their belief in the afterlife was strong. At the moment of death, they believed that the psyche, or spirit of the dead, was left from the body. In the Underworld, Hades and his wife, Persephone, was in charge of the countless crowds of shadowy figures or the "shades" of all those who had died.
